The Story Behind “Heart Awakening”
Years ago, while living and painting in the wild beauty of Tofino, Deanna received word that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, would be visiting a local boutique where her work was displayed. Inspired by Sophie’s strength, grace, and public advocacy for wellness and women’s empowerment, Deanna felt a creative surge.
That very night, she stayed up until dawn painting a portrait of Sophie in the exalted warrior yoga pose, set against the backdrop of Chesterman Beach. The piece, titled Heart Awakening, was still drying when Sophie walked into the shop the next day.
Sophie immediately connected with the painting — but had to leave before finalizing anything. To everyone’s surprise, she returned shortly after with the Prime Minister himself. The two of them stood quietly with the painting before deciding to bring it home.
The story went viral, sparking media attention across Canada, including interviews with CBC, Global News, CHEK News, and Hello! Magazine. But for Deanna, the moment wasn’t about the headlines — it was about how a single painting, born of inspiration and instinct, became a symbol of connection, presence, and the power of honoring the feminine.
